The Bridge replacement process takes an average of 6–7 years nationwide. We have been working through it for 7 years.

The Fayette Street Bridge is moving through the federal bridge funding process. The average timeline for federal bridge funding is 6–7 years nationwide. The city does not control the pace of this process, but we are actively engaged at every step.

The Washington Street Bridge is in the same federal process as the Fayette Street Bridge. Both are being tracked simultaneously. Quarterly updates will be posted here as each process milestone is reached.

Economic Development Projects

The Wills Hotel is open. This is a historic downtown property being brought back into active use with a significant investment in Cumberland's core.
Opening date: June 1, 2026
The hotel opening is part of a broader pattern of downtown investment that includes new retail, building redevelopment, and increased visitor traffic to the region.

This is a direct result of the infrastructure investment and economic development work the city has done in partnership with the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation.

Housing & Neighborhood

The blight removal program is active and ongoing. This is one of the most direct things the city can do for neighborhood revitalization clearing deteriorated and abandoned properties creates space for new investment and sends a clear signal that the city is paying attention.

Affordable housing development is an active priority. Working families should be able to live in the city where they work. The city is actively pursuing funding and partnerships to make that possible.
Sustainable Energy

This is not about ideology — it is about math. When city operations cost less to run, that money stays in Cumberland and works for residents. Lower energy costs for the city mean less upward pressure on the operational budgets that fund your services.
